Take a tip or two from the pros when it comes to search engine optimization, or commonly known as SEO. The best way to get more people in the door, buying your product or choosing your service is if they can quickly Google you.
I remember hearing when I was a lot younger that the smart businesses chose a name that began with the letter A. You see, back in the day, people used to reference the Yellow Pages when looking for a business. You would look up a contractor and call the first one on the list: A+ Contractors.
Google rankings work in a similar way. The closer you are to the top of the first page, the better your chances of someone clicking on your website. Google knows that people want to choose the most popular business, one that is reliable and trust-worthy. The businesses at the top of the list are the ones that people use the most and, therefore, are the most trusted. So, how do you get your website to the top?
Clicks. All the honest clicks that you can get. I say honest because it is very frowned upon in the internet community to buy these clicks. Of course you can sponsor your content and promote it to generate organic clicks, but the out-right purchase of clicks would be the equivalent to buying carbon points to cheat on your emissions test.
How do you get these clicks?
There is a wide array of sources out there to help you find your way. One of my favorites is an article in Forbes that provides you 10 simple ways to improve your ranking. There is also a trusted article in Entrepreneur that breaks it down with an infographic. Make your content relevant, current and an authority on a topic.
In the end, it’s going to be tough competing for broad topics against major online publications. Find your niche and get your business out there.
What’s the take away? Start marketing your business through social media and blogs. Make sure it looks smart, professional and that it still has a bit of your personality in it. People want to connect with people, even if it’s over the internet.
